Field Note • July: The Rhythm That Creates Freedom

Summer has always felt like permission to throw the schedule out the window.
Longer evenings.
Spontaneous plans.
More sunshine.
More celebrations.
For many years, I believed that freedom looked like saying yes to all of it.
Looking back, I can smile at how predictable my summers became. Staying up later than my body wanted. More fried foods, more sweets, too much time in the sun, and by the end of the season wondering why I felt so depleted.
When I first learned that Ayurveda encourages us to become even more mindful of our daily rhythms during the heat of summer, I remember thinking it sounded completely backwards.
Isn't summer supposed to be the time to let go?
Over the past few years, something has quietly changed.
The routines that once felt restrictive have become deeply nourishing.
I find myself wanting to wake at a familiar time, enjoy meals that leave me feeling energized, step outside before the heat of the day, and make space for rest before my body asks for it.
What surprises me most is that this rhythm hasn't made life smaller.
It has made it larger.
This summer, while taking a break from teaching, I've had the joy of creating BettyBee, publishing her first children's book, building her little corner of Explore. Yoga. Health., and watching new ideas arrive almost daily.
It has felt a little like watching a beehive in midsummer.
Not rushed.
Not forced.
Simply growing, one cell at a time.
The honey doesn't appear all at once.
It is created through countless small, consistent acts that, over time, become something beautifully abundant.
Perhaps our lives work much the same way.
The older I get, the less I believe balance is about saying no to life's seasons.
Instead, I think balance allows us to receive more fully what each season is already offering.
Summer is naturally full of energy.
The question is whether we're spending that energy faster than we're replenishing it.
Or whether we're tending it with enough care that, by the end of the season, we're able to enjoy the sweetness it has quietly been creating all along.
So this month, I leave you with a question:
What simple rhythm in your life quietly gives you more freedom than you once believed possible?
